The Atwood-Carlton-Millett Family

The Atwood-Millett family of Westford, MA, is primarily represented by the Westford Historical Society’s Atwood Collection. This past town family represents a notable part of local history and culture, particularly the individuals within the family. Their part of local culture is of great significance beyond politics and businesses.

The Westford Historical Society works to bring the town’s cultural heritage to the public. The first of its kind for this museum, this online exhibit is but a small part of what the museum can offer, while providing education on a family lacking serious presentation up to this point. This is but a small part of what this museum can offer.

The family included a doctor, nurse, lawyer, and artist, and there are connections to other towns across the country. Lillian, Mary, and Sarah “Carrie” Atwood were lifelong Westford residents. Grace (Atwood) Millett was a nurse in Westford into the 1950s, and was featured in the updated and expanded medical exhibit. Her son, William Millett was a local artist, and last of the family to live in Westford. William died in 2007, and his estate donated a large portion of his possessions to the museum in 2008. Here is a brief video on Bill Millett.

The items chosen work to represent the past Westford family. The bulk of the collection was donated by Deborah Stein Sharpe in 2008, and items exhibited are from this collection unless otherwise stated. There are numerous photos available, including daguerreotypes. Lillian and Carrie Atwood wrote now transcribed diaries. Items that connect directly with family members include the medical bag used by Grace Millett, and a watercolor by William Millett of his studio. Other objects provide a view into the overall life of the Westford family.
